UK: BGF-backed Operam buys First For Education

Operam Education Group has acquired West Midlands-based education recruitment agency First For Education, in a deal supported by funding from BGF and HSBC.

Operam received £2.5 million from BGF, alongside £2.5 million of senior debt from HSBC to support this acquisition.

In addition, BGF has committed further £2.5 million of equity funding to support future acquisitions, which will take BGF’s total investment in Operam, including its initial investment provided in 2019, to £9.5 million.

Operam is a provider of qualified and support staff to schools across the Midlands and North of England.

This add-on follows a series of acquisitions inked by Operam since its inception in 2017, including the purchases of Provide Education, The Education Specialists, Teachers UK and Key Stage Teacher Supply.

With the addition of First For Education, Operam plans to further strengthen its presence in key regional markets and establish itself as a leading independent education recruitment agency in the North of England.

Eddie Austin, chief executive of Operam, said: “First For Education is a real industry specialist, with an excellent track record and reputation in the West Midlands. Its footprint in the region will further build on our presence in the Midlands and on our vision of creating a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ in education recruitment.

“In order to support the group’s organic growth plans we also recently launched Operam Education Tutoring and Operam Education Leadership Recruitment. Both of these will continue to scale our service offering across all group companies and support educational establishments nationwide.”
