Switzerland: Orell Füssli acquires educational media publisher hep Verlag

Swiss printing and bookselling company Orell Füssli has bought a majority stake in educational media publisher hep Verlag.

Berne-based hep Verlag develops teaching and learning media for secondary level II, tertiary education and vocational education. Its portfolio includes more than 900 titles and offers fully digitalised learning media editions. With 45 employees, the company generated a turnover of around CHF 10 million in 2021.

hep Verlag will continue to operate as an independent legal entity and publisher with the existing management team. However, founder Peter Egger will leave the company after a transitional period while Manuel Schär, long-time managing director of hep Verlag, will take over as chairman. Furthermore, two members of Orell Füssli will join hep Verlag’s board of directors.

Through this deal, Orell Füssli plans to expand its existing publishing portfolio, strengthen its position in the learning media market and further boost its growth strategy in the education sector.

According to the company, the acquisition of hep Verlag will make a positive EBIT contribution, and Orell Füssli now expects to reach the same EBIT margin in 2022 as the previous year.

Orell Füssli employs 600 staff across five countries and generates annual revenues of around CHF 210 million. The company is listed on SIX Swiss Exchange.
